Lesson #9. How to speak about people in Ukrainian?

Let’s learn how to describe people. You will be able to speak about your friends in Ukrainian!

So, as you remember in Ukrainian we have to change the endings of adjectives depending on the gender. If you want to revise adjectives, here is the link

To make it easy for today, you have to know that masculine adjective has the ending -ИЙ and feminine adjective has the ending -A.

Physical appearance:

HOW TO...

У нього зелені /ze’leni/, блакитні /bla’kytni/, карі /’kari/ очі /’ochi/ – he has green, blue, brown eyes

You can also say –він зеленоокий– he is green-eyed 

У неї світле /’svitle/, темне /’temne/, сиве /’syve/ волосся /vo’lossia/ – she has fair, dark, grey hair 

Блондин /blondyn/, брюнет /briunet/, шатен /chaten/ – Can you guess the meaning of these words? 

Коротке /ko’rotke/, довге /’dovhe/, пряме /pria’me/, кучеряве /kuche’riave/ волосся – short, long, straight, curly hair

Борода /boro’da/, вуса /’vusa/ – beard, moustaches 

Він високий_vin vysokyi_

Він худий /hu’dyi/, повний /’povnyi/, середньої статури /se’rednioi sta’tury/ – he is skinny, chubby, medium 

More adjectives! 

Гарний, красивий, симпатичний – good looking, beautiful, nice

Він добре/погано виглядає – He looks good/bad

Він схожий на … (+Accusative) – He look like … 

Character:

Він веселий /ve’selyi/ (happy), сумний /sum’nyi/ (sad), серйозний /se’rioznyi/ (serious), дружелюбний /druzhe’liubnyi/ (friendly), спокійний /spo’kiynyi/ (calm), добрий /’dobryi/ (kind).

Енергійний /energiynyi/ (active), емоційний /emo’tsiynyi/ (emotional), злий /zlyi/ (angry), егоїст /egoist/ (selfish), лінивий /li’nyvyi/ (lazy), безвідповідальний /dezvidpovi’dalnyi/ (irresponsible), сором’язливий /soromiaz’lyvyi/ (shy), розумний /ro’zumnyi/ (clever), ввічливий /vvichlivyi/ (polite), дурний/нерозумний /dur’nyi/ (stupid), нудний /’nudnyi/ (boring), цікавий /tsi’kavyi/ (interesting)

AN IDIOM

And here is an idiom: Він душа компанії /doo’sha com’panii/ – it means that he is a lively person who likes to be the center of attention at social gatherings. Literally “soul of a company”.

Interests:

Йому/Їй (не) подобається … – He/She (doesn’t) likes :

працювати /pratsiuvaty/ (to work), відпочивати /vidpochyvaty/ (to have a rest), читати /chytaty/ (to read), слухати музику /sluhaty muzyku/ (to listen to a music), вчитися /vchytysia/ (to study), байдикувати /baidykuvaty/ (to do nothing)

Now you can describe people in Ukrainian.
