Hello, everyone! How many of you like reading comics? As for me, I am not a comics person. The first comics I have read was « Les aventures de Tintin » in French. I was curious to find out more about the world of comics and to work my French, of course. After reading two of them, I wasn’t impressed, despite the fact than the both stories were funny.
Comics – « des bandes dessinées » or simply « BD » in French
Recently, I was in a media library with my husband and he advised me to take « The Silex and the city » comics. He told that it is super funny and it worth reading.
There are several books in the collection. It tells about the adventures of a prehistory family mixed with modern jokes. There are even the series of this comics transformed in a cartoon. If you are interested, you can watch it here: « The Silex and the city »
I have learnt a lot of new words! It is mostly daily expressions that we don’t learn at school or language classes, but it’s so great to know them! For example, did you know that blanc-bec means « a young man without experience » or « a boyfriend » in this context.
There are so many other funny expressions, such as les doigts dans le nez – means do something easily, il déraille complètement – he became crazy, des foutaises – stupidities…
There are a lot of jokes connected with politics, society, so every time I needed explanation, but there are also many jokes that everyone can understand.
In a conclusion, I would like to say that reading comics is a great and funny way to practise your target language. Even if you don’t understand anything, try it and I am sure that you will learn a lot of new words.
Great advice, I’m currently trying to improve my French with Tintin! It’s really helpful: having the context provided by the pictures makes it much easier to figure out what words and expressions mean. I always recommend my English students read comics in English, but some find it too embarrassing.
Thanks! My first comics of Tintin was « Objectif Lune ». I find it quite interesting. Which one do you read?
I started with « Tintin au Congo, » which was a little strange as it’s so outdated and the story’s so simplistic. But then I read « Tintin au Tibet » which was much more interesting. Going to choose my next one soon.
I love your idea of reading comics to help one learn another language. I’ve never been a fan of comics except for « Peanuts, » but I enjoyed looking at this one and learning some French.
Thank you 🙂 I googled the « Peanuts » comics and it should be interesting one to read. Thank you for sharing!
